Nanaimo News Bulletin

I’ve been at the Nanaimo News Bulletin since 2013, serving as arts editor, general reporter and local politics reporter.

From 2013 until March 2020, I worked at the News Bulletin. I started out as an arts reporter, eventually became the arts editor, and then moved into general reporting, focusing on Nanaimo and Lantzville councils, provincial politics, development and local aviation.

Arts editor

I served as the arts and entertainment editor for roughly two years, during which my responsibilities included page design, headline writing, story generation and photography.

I approached the arts section differently, focusing more on telling stories than writing about the common content that can be found in many community newspaper’s art sections.

Radio Nation

In 2010, I created and hosted an award-winning weekly online radio show called Radio Nation while attending Centennial College.

In 2010, I created and hosted an award-winning weekly online radio show called Radio Nation while attending Centennial College.

Radio Nation featured live interviews with rising musicians from across North America. Musicians who agreed to be interviewed on Radio Nation would have their music included in the show’s regular music rotation.

I was responsible for booking live guests, researching topics for the show, updating the website and managing a small staff of three contributing writers who provided web content.

Over a three year period, Radio Nation became a respected internet radio program with a loyal following and regular listenership. At the height of its popularity, the show drew an average of 200 plus listeners per episode and was heavily active in social media.

North Shore News

I interned at the North Shore News in 2012 and then served as a contributing entertainment writer until November 2013.

I was a full-time intern for the North Shore News in North Vancouver, B.C. from January-April 2012.  This was my first experience working in a “proper” newsroom and I learned a tremendous amount during my time there.

I never once felt like an intern at the North Shore News either. In my first week, I attended a press conference held by then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper, which was a thrilling experience for me.

My notable stories as an intern include an in-depth story on a new type of road paint, and a lengthy piece on wedding planning. Following my internship, I became a regular contributor to the paper’s entertainment section until late 2013.

Even after all these years, many of my favourite memories as a journalist are from my time with the North Shore News.

As an intern and entertainment writer, I was extremely fortunate to interview some of the biggest names in the North American entertainment industry which include …
